Volunteer Safety Checklist

A quick guide to protect your rights, benefits, and finances before and during volunteering.

1. Get it in writing

Ask for the volunteer policy and any terms covering payments or allowances. Save copies for your records.

2. Know what’s being paid

Expenses for travel or meals are fine. Fixed sums or payments tied to hours/tasks may be treated as wages.

3. Check before you accept

If you get benefits, confirm with DWP or an adviser whether a payment will count as income.

4. Understand volunteer vs. worker

No set hours should be required for volunteers. If money depends on hours worked or tasks done, you may be a worker with extra rights and tax duties.

5. Plan for changes

If allowances can stop suddenly, don’t rely on them. Keep notes of any policy changes or reasons given for stopping payments.

6. Trust your judgement

If things don’t feel right or match what you agreed, you can walk away and seek advice.

Note: This is general guidance, not legal advice. Rules can change — get personalised advice if payments or benefits are involved.
